About Earth Day
April 22, 2007 marked the 38th Earth Day celebration with more than 500 million people in 175 countries observing Earth Day. United States Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin conceived the celebration in response to wide spread environmental degradation. The tremendous response to the first Earth Day can be credited with helping persuade Congress to pass many important environmental laws including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. Earth Day Network, a non-profit organization, continues to coordinate the Earth Day observance which is the largest secular holiday in the world.
