Teaching Kids How to Save Energy
-
Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent (energy efficient) light bulbs. A homeowner can run as many as four energy efficient light bulbs for the same cost as running just one traditional incandescent bulb.
-
Turn off the lights when you’re done using them, and turn off the TV, computer, video games and other electrical stuff when you leave a room.
-
Decide what you want from the refrigerator before opening the door- then close it quickly afterwards. Up to one-third of the cool air can escape every time you open the door.
-
Turn off dripping faucets. One drop per second can add up to 165 gallons of hot water a month - that's more than one person uses in two weeks!
-
Don’t waste hot water. Turn the water off when brushing your teeth or washing your face.
-
Ask your mom or dad to help you plant a tree to shade your house on hot summer days – look for which side of the house is best and plant a deciduous tree.
-
Use a ceiling fan to spread cool air throughout your room instead of lowering the thermostat.
-
Don’t crank the thermostat past the desired temperature. This will not cool your home any faster, and if you forget to put it back, you will waste energy.
-
Keep doors closed. Shut the door or at least try to limit the number of times that doors to the outside are opened and closed. Each time you open the door, warm air enters the house.
