COMMUNITIES: A Culture of Caring

While TXU employees interact with customers and communities on business issues every day, the company’s community involvement is exceptional because of the investment in people and local economies. Whether it is donating time and money to volunteer efforts and community events, helping people in temporary need pay their energy bills, educating consumers about energy efficiency or investing in economic development, we are proud to be part of the fabric of our communities. Our commitment to making Texas communities better places to live and work is captured in the many ways we help others.
Touching hands.
TXU gives back to the communities it serves to make them better places to live and work.
Volunteerism
One of the most effective ways TXU gives back to its communities is through the unselfish efforts and dedication of employees and their enthusiastic volunteerism. In 2004, employees contributed about 25,000 hours of community service. The following list highlights a variety of ways that TXU employees made a difference:

» TXU employees received the Platts Global Energy Award for Community Development Program of the Year in recognition of their participation in the TXU Weather-Wise community outreach program, which helps low-income residents make their homes more energy efficient.

» More than 200 high-energy employees across TXU conducted one of the most successful United Way campaigns ever, raising $1.4 million and winning awards for their best practices.

» For the second year, TXU sponsored the Texas Amateur Athletic Association’s TXU Games of Texas. These Olympic-style events featured a multitude of sports for all ages. Approximately 10,000 athletes and 53,000 spectators attended.

» TXU sponsored Operation Supply Our Students in Corpus Christi to help fund school supplies for low-income families.

» When the Hopkins County Ministerial Alliance needed help inflating 300 soccer balls and basketballs for Christmas presents, TXU employees at the Monticello Mine responded by spending their work breaks to get the job done.

» In cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America, TXU sponsored Home Energy Makeovers in 10 cities across the state to raise awareness of home energy efficiency.

» More than 260 high-school students learned leadership skills, communication styles, personal goal-setting and the importance of community service from TXU employees as part of the Dallas Independent School District’s Leadership 11 program.

» TXU employee fund-raising for the 2004 MS 150 Red River Challenge resulted in a donation of $40,000 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

» Make a Difference Day allowed TXU employees to partner with the City of Lancaster to help develop the 189-acre Bear Creek Park into a nature preserve and educational center.

» Celebration of the Bands, hosted by TXU, featured the marching bands and dance teams from Grambling State and Prairie View A&M Universities. This event, held in front of TXU’s headquarters, helped celebrate the State Fair Classic football game between the two schools.

» The company sponsored Senior Citizen Days at the Texas State Fair to promote home energy efficiency. Senior citizens received free admission to the fair on these days, and TXU also sponsored presentations by local home-improvement specialists.

» TXU employees also supported other programs, including Habitat for Humanity, Operation Installation (installing fire alarms in low-income housing), Salvation Army’s Angel Tree, March of Dimes WalkAmerica and the Juvenile Diabetes Run for Fun.
