2004 Corporate Citizen Report
Hurricane Recovery Assistance
TXU’s good-neighbor policy extends beyond Texas to help
others in need. When four successive hurricanes hit the U.S.
Gulf Coast in 2004, TXU crews and contractors were there
to assist with electric restoration. In all, two work teams of
almost 200 TXU employees spent 41,000 hours away from
home and traveled 280,000 miles to help repair critical
electric infrastructure. In addition, the company released
more than 800 contractors working in the TXU system for
hurricane restoration efforts. Throughout these efforts,
TXU ensures support can be offered to other companies in
need without adversely affecting reliability or service in its
own service area.
CONTRIBUTIONS AND CONSUMER PROGRAMS
As part of its broad set of customer and community
initiatives, TXU significantly enhanced its social
contributions in 2004 as it committed to a fivefold increase
in funding for customers who are in critical and temporary
need of assistance in paying their electric bills. Between
2004 and 2007, TXU will set aside $15 million for its
Energy Aid program. This amount is in addition to TXU’s
weatherization assistance to low-income customers of
approximately $30 million over the next three years. Other
community outreach in 2004 included a $1.4 million
contribution to United Way and support that includes the
Dallas Women’s Museum, Texas Trees Foundation, Girls
Inc. and chambers of commerce around the service area.
TXU Energy Aid
Since its inception in 1983, TXU Energy Aid has been the
company’s flagship assistance program. Through $15
million in customer donations and $19 million in corporate
donations, this program has helped more than 250,000
families in temporary financial need pay their energy bills.
In 2004, TXU announced a $15 million corporate donation
to TXU Energy Aid over three years. During the year, TXU
Energy Aid provided $4.8 million in benefits for some
29,000 families. This assistance came from a combination
of corporate, employee and customer sources, including
the first-ever TXU employee fund-raiser.
Energy Assistance Programs
As the Texas energy market leader in low-income social
advocacy, TXU has cooperative relationships with more
than 500 community service and charitable organizations
for low-income assistance. A dedicated staff helped
administer assistance by handling about 120,000 inquiries
in 2004 through multiple social service channels.
For the third year, the company hosted the TXU Energy
Assistance Workshops for community help organizations.
These eight workshops at locations across the state helped
educate more than 400 attendees representing 150
community organizations about the variety of TXU and
TXU-supported programs available to assist at-risk and
low-income families.
The company also continues to be very active in
supporting low-income programs through the state-
administered System Benefit Fund. LITE UP Texas, a
reduced-rate discount for low-income customers, is the
largest program supported by the fund. TXU currently has
a number of low-income customers who receive a 10%
discount on their electric bills through this program.
As part of TXU’s energy-savings focus, the company
administers eight state-sponsored energy efficiency
programs. Together, these programs provide energy
efficiency assistance to approximately 70,000 customers
each year for energy savings of about 277,000 megawatt-hours.
As part of the $10 million Low-Income
Weatherization program, TXU created the award-winning
Weather-Wise Community Outreach effort to educate
consumers about energy efficiency. This fund is available
through contractors to help low-income households
weatherproof their homes. These free or low-cost services
help reduce energy consumption and lower energy bills.
As a 2004 community service, more than 600 TXU
employees donated their time over the summer to
weatherproof and increase the energy efficiency of 16
homes across the state.
The company also sponsored six senior citizen
symposiums featuring a home-improvement specialist to
promote weatherization programs.
