ENVIRONMENT: Cleaner Air and a Better Environment

TXU is committed to protecting the air, water and land by meeting or going beyond environmental standards. We’re focused on achieving environmental excellence even as we meet the challenge of providing vital electric service to millions of Texans.
Electric use in the U.S. has increased while utility emissions have decreased. Between 1980 and 2002, real GDP rose 93% and electricity use rose 75% while SO2 emissions dropped 38% and NOx emissions dropped 40%.

TXU takes responsible action to protect our air, land and water quality.
Clearing the Air
Even as the nation’s population and economy have grown, the air quality in the U.S. and in Texas is improving, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). TXU is proud to be part of this effort and brings a strong track record of reducing emissions.

Since 1990, the company has reduced emission rates of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 64%, carbon dioxide (CO2) by 11% and sulfur dioxide (SO2) by 13%. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, TXU has reduced its NOx emission rate by almost 90% since 1997. Compared with the national average for 2003 (the latest period for which national data is available), TXU’s SO2 emission rate (tons per million Btu, or MMBtu) was 4.7% above the national average, the NOx rate was 47.8% below the national average and the CO2 rate was 0.92% below the average. These comparisons are for emissions from fossil-fueled power plants only and do not take into account the effects of generation from zero-emission sources such as nuclear, wind and other renewable energy sources.
