TXU safety milestones in 2004 include Martin Lake Mine – national safety record – 7.8 million safe work hours, no lost time due to injuries for 6 years; Monticello power plant – 7 million safe work hours, no lost time due to injuries for 12 years; Comanche Peak power plant – 2.7 million safe work hours, no long time due to injuries for 1 year; Distribution – 3 million safe work hours, no lost time due to injuries for 1 year; Decatur, Commerce and Bonham distribution service centers and Tyler transmission – no lost time due to injuries for 57, 56, 55 and 30 years, respectively. Safety at Work
The nature of TXU’s business – producing and delivering electricity – demands operational safety for employees, contractors and the public. With more than 110,000 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines, high-voltage equipment and a variety of power plants and lignite mines, TXU safety efforts cover multiple businesses and communities across Texas. The company has a long history of safety achievements, but maintaining its record takes continuous vigilance and consistent focus.

Safety Training
Safety training and accident prevention for both employees and contractors is integral to TXU’s business operations. Employees are thoroughly trained and equipped with safety gear before they ever begin work, and their safety training continues as long as they work for TXU. Proper safety techniques and accident prevention and response are stressed in general job training and for each specific project. In addition, operational employees are trained in the use of defibrillators and given basic first-aid instruction. Regular safety meetings also help stress a safe work environment.

In an effort to raise awareness concerning vehicle safety and improve the vehicle accident incident rate, TXU is using the National Safety Council’s online defensive driving course. More than 80% of employees who drive company vehicles have taken this course or are enrolled to take it. This program has the highest rate of success in reducing the severity and frequency of collisions by those who successfully complete it.

Safety Recognition
When employees use their safety training to save a life either at work or in the community, they are recognized with the TXU Lifesaving Award. In 2004, nine employees received TXU Lifesaving Awards for using their safety training to save the lives of colleagues, spouses and even a person in cardiac arrest at a department store. Since the recognition program began in 1989, 165 awards have been presented to TXU employees. Fifty percent of these awards involved rescues of individuals who were not TXU employees.

TXU takes great pride in safe work conditions, and business units routinely recognize and celebrate safety milestones.
