Electrical Safety Tips
TXU and its employees share a great concern for safety - specifically YOUR safety. We routinely publish guidelines with tips for the safe use of electricity, especially during extreme weather conditions.
Outdoor Electrical Safety Tips
- Stay away from power lines, and all downed lines should be considered dangerous
- If a person or object comes in contact with a power line, don’t touch the person, object or line. Call 911 immediately!
- If your vehicle comes in contact with a power line, stay inside the car, and warn others not to touch the car or the downed line. If you must leave your vehicle, jump clear to avoid being in contact with the car and the ground at the same time
- Don’t climb power poles or towers, or trees near power lines
- Never touch or go near electrical equipment.
- Never fly kites, model airplanes or balloons near power lines
- Never touch electrical cords that are broken or have wire showing
- When working with long metal ladders or tools, stay away from overhead power lines
- Power lines are also underground, so before you dig call 1-800-344-8377. It's the Law!
Indoor Electrical Safety Tips
- Guard against electrical shocks by installing ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) in bathroom outlets and other similar areas
- Never place electrical appliances on a tub or sink
- Don’t use a plugged in appliance, like a hair dryer, when standing on a damp floor or in a wet bathtub or shower
- If a plugged in appliance falls into water, DO NOT reach in to get it out. Turn off electricity at circuit breaker or fuse box before unplugging.
- If your home has a fuse box or circuit breaker, learn how to replace a blown fuse and reset a tripped breaker. For fused circuits try to keep a supply of extra fuses handy, and never try to override a blown fuse. It can cause serious electrical damage or cause a fire
- Don’t overload an outlet or circuit in your home, such as with Christmas lights
- Unplug appliances before working on them
- Use only electrical cords in good condition, don’t run them under rugs or furniture, and DO NOT staple or nail them in place
- Instruct children not to play with or plug anything into an electrical outlet
- Use plastic outlet caps on unused outlets
