Safety Training and Recognition

Safety training and accident prevention for both employees and contractors are integral to TXU's business operations. Employees are thoroughly trained and equipped with safety gear before they ever begin work, and their safety training continues as long as they work for TXU. In addition, operational employees are trained in the use of defibrillators and given basic first-aid instruction, and regular safety meetings also help stress a safe work environment.

In an effort to raise awareness concerning vehicle safety and improve the vehicle accident incident rate, TXU is using the National Safety Council's online defensive driving course. More than 3,200 employees had completed the training by the end of 2005. This program has the highest rate of success in reducing the severity and frequency of collisions by those who successfully complete it.

TXU Lifesavers

When employees use their safety training to save a life either at work or in the community, they are recognized with the TXU Lifesaving Award. In 2005, six employees received TXU Lifesaving Awards for using their safety training to save the lives of colleagues, spouses, and even a person in cardiac arrest at a department store. Since the recognition program began in 1989, 188 awards have been presented to TXU employees. Fifty percent of these awards involved rescues of individuals who were not TXU employees. TXU takes great pride in safe work conditions, and business units routinely recognize and celebrate safety milestones. (see chart)
